The Il Divo World Tour 2007 bandwagon kicks off tonight right here in KL. StarTwo caught up with the quartet last week for a short chat.

THE success of the international foursome of Il Divo cannot be denied anymore, not after three successful studio albums and a Christmas Collection, but the lads are still curious to see what’s in store for them.

Since the boys – Frenchman Sebastien Izambard, Spaniard Carlos Marin, Swiss Urs Buhler and American David Miller – were already in town a week before their concert date, there was time to kill and interviews were not out of the question. Amid jokes about Simon Cowell (no worries, they weren’t nasty jokes, as the members of Il Divo have ample respect for the man responsible for them being where they are now) and American Idol, they certainly were relaxed as they sat back for their last sit-down Q&A last Thursday afternoon.

With four albums to your credit – Il Divo, Ancora, Christmas Collection and Siempre – what has the journey been like coming to this point in your career?

Carlos: It’s been an unbelievable journey, because when we started I never expected so much success. Sometimes it’s really tough, you don’t see your family, girlfriends, wives, but it’s an amazing experience to record four albums and two videos in less than three years, it’s an enormous adventure.

Sebastien: We all feel very lucky to have all this success through those different albums. I’m always scared and sceptical how people are going to perceive our new album. You just always get surprised by the success that you have and by the fact that you can travel the world and share the music of Il Divo with everyone. I think what we’re looking for the most is probably coming with new ideas of doing a new album. It’s always about improving ourselves and bringing something new to what we’re going to do.

There’s more of a Latin sound to the new album.What has been the progression of the Il Divo sound and what IS the Il Divo sound?

David: The Il Divo “sound” is just the combination of so many different elements. We have our musical backgrounds, we have a plethora of different genres that we’ve pooled. At the beginning of every song it sounds like a pop song, at the end of the song it finishes like an operatic finale, there’s everything in between.

This new album is the next step on the journey. We don’t ever feel like we’ve arrived or we’ve found it. We’re always searching for what it’s going to sound like, within the context and the framework of the Il Divo sound but also trying to push the borders.

In this particular case we did end up with a very Latin heavy sound, but I don’t think that is ultimately the direction. It just depends on what the songs will be for the next album. It might be more in that (Latin) direction, it might go more in a rock direction or it might return to more traditional classics, it just depends on the choice of songs.

Once again, the original songs on the album seem to lean more towards a different, unique sound. How has working with different songwriters been like?

Urs: When we started on the first album, we had about six different producers. Some of them were more comfortable for us to work with, some of the producers did get the whole idea of Il Divo more so that circle has narrowed down a bit ... Then also with the success, more and more people want to write songs for us. We only have original songs from two different teams now.

These are people who have been writing for us from the first moment on. Also, as we get to know each others’ voices, those people understand, more and more, and they are able to write much more specifically for the group.

How do you understand each other now, after nearly three years together?

Carlos: Obviously much better, because when we started the main language (of communication) was English, and my English wasn’t fantastic. (Then) it wasn’t so much of understanding, but more misunderstanding, it was a little mess (he laughs). But now we’re like brothers, cousins.

What was touring with Barbra Streisand like (back in October and November 2006)?

Sebastien: Barbra Streisand is such an amazing singer. When we first we heard about it, and our manager said, you’re going to do almost 25 dates with her, something like that, we couldn’t really figure out whether that was true or not. However, when that came together and we went to the rehearsals at Los Angeles for the first time and to work with her, we felt like, you know, it was meant to be at some point because the voices really worked well together.

Some of the people actually thought we were opening for her and we were really sharing the stage with her, which was very different. People were very surprised, and I must say I was a bit scared in the beginning going on that stage, when people were expecting to see Barbra Streisand and not expecting to see Il Divo come on stage to share a moment with her. It was an amazing journey and an amazing experience for the four of us.

What was the second appearance on the Oprah Winfrey show last month (December 2006) like?

David (being the American in the group): I really know the Oprah show and so it was really cool. The first time we went on it was more about American Cowell .... (he slips up and breaks into laughter). My English pronunciation is not so good today ... but you might as well call it American Cowell ... (or Simon Factor, Carlos quips) ...

This last time was really an appearance just about us, about what we’ve done in almost three years of being together. She saw us in the Barbra Streisand concert and when she saw how much we had matured from being on her show to being on Barbra Streisand’s she realised she wanted to have us on her show again.

Il Divo will kick of their World Tour right here in Malaysia tonight at the Plenary Hall, KL Convention Centre, KL. The event is one of the major kick offs for Visit Malaysia Year 2007. Brought in by Arianna Event Management, the sponsors for the event are CIMB, Tourism Malaysia, Shangri-La Hotel Kuala Lumpur, ntv7, BMW, Channel V and SonyBMG. Shangri-La Hotel Kuala Lumpur is the official hotel, while The Star is the official media.

Il Divo: Simon Cowell Doesn't Control Us

While their world tour is at the forefront of their minds, Urs reveals they have also been thinking about the upcoming fourth album. Their albums are normally released in November every year – can fans expect the same this year?

"We have been thinking about it a lot. We’ve released four albums, three DVDs and different combinations in almost two years, and gone around the world," Sebastien says.

"We just can’t keep up working at that pace, and it’s too much for the public to keep supporting us. We want them to give us a bit more time. We will very probably record it in the second half of this year, but it’s not going to come out until around Mother’s Day next year."

David adds: "We want our next album to be directional because the past three albums have been under the broad stroke of romance, and that can mean a lot of different things for a lot of people. We haven’t decided on what that direction is going to be, but we want it to be more of a concept like, Il Divo sings all Beatles or Tom Jones songs, something very directional."

But while Simon Cowell has a say, he won’t have full control over it.

"We will work as a team. He gives a list, then we give a list and we just find some songs that work and some that won’t. On Siempre, he was suggesting Everybody Hurts by REM, and we said no, it won’t work," Carlos explains.

Sebastien adds with a smile: "The reason why Simon has chosen us is because we have between 10 to 15, or (looks over at Carlos) 50 years of experience. He is very trustful of us, especially since he has got to know us. He has no control."

Alors que la tournée est encore dans tous les esprits, Urs dit qu’ils pensent déjà à prochain album. Leurs albums sont généralement mis en vente chaque année en novembre – est-ce que les fans peuvent attendre la même chose cette année ?

« Nous avons pensé que c’était beaucoup. Nous avons sorti 4 albums, 3 dvd et autres en seulement 2 ans et partis autour du monde », dit Sébastien.

« Nous ne pouvons plus travailler à ce rythme, c’est trop pour le public qui doit nous supporter. Nous voulons leur donner un peu plus de temps. Nous allons probablement enregistrer pendant le deuxième semestre de l’année mais l’album ne sortira qu’aux alentours du Mother’s Day l’année prochaine. »

David ajoute : « nous voulons que notre prochain album soit plus directionnel parce que les 3 albums étaient très romantiques et que nous signifions beaucoup d’autres choses pour beaucoup de personnes. Nous n’avons pas encore décidé quelle direction ce sera mais nous voulons que ce soit un concept comme Il Divo chante les chansons des Beatles ou Tom Jones, quelque chose comme cela. »

Mais comme Simon Cowell l’a dit, il n’a plus le contrôle entier sur l’album.

« Nous voulons travailler comme une équipe. Il nous donne une liste et nous décidons quelles chansons nous voulons travailler et quelles n’iront pas. Sur Siempre, il avait suggéré Everybody Hurts de REM, et nous avons dit non, cela n’ira pas » explique Carlos.

Sébastien ajoute avec un sourire : « la raison pour laquelle Simon nous a choisi est que nous avons entre 10, ou 15, ou (regardant Carlos) 50 années d’expérience. Il nous fait confiance, spécialement depuis qu’il a appris à nous connaître. Il n’a pas de contrôle. »
